The Texas Education Agency requires students to receive a minimum of 75,600 minutes of instruction each school year. Mesquite ISD includes two bad weather make-up days in its school calendar; however, this year, it was necessary to close for three days due to inclement weather conditions.
The most recent weather closure occurred on Feb. 24, 2022. To recover the instructional minutes lost on that day, the Leadership Team looked at several options. Rather than adding a day to the school calendar or adding minutes to the beginning of the school day, the team determined that extending the school day by 10 minutes in the afternoon would cause the least amount of disruption and inconvenience to students, parents and staff members.
Beginning Monday, March 21, and continuing through Wednesday, May 25, dismissal time will be 10 minutes later at all grade levels. The early release schedule for Thursday, May 26, will remain the same. Afternoon bus schedules will be adjusted to meet this new schedule. Campuses will adjust their schedules accordingly. New dismissal times will be as follows:
Elementary School 3:15 p.m.
Middle School 3:45 p.m.
High School 4:05 p.m.
