About Orchestra:

The John Horn High School Orchestra is a thriving organization of string players with a rich history. We are divided into three orchestras based on auditions with the aim to meet players where they are at and advanced their technique. The orchestra was founded in 2000 at the opening of John Horn High School under the direction of Mr. Richard Engel. He led the orchestra until his retirement in 2017 when Mrs. Jamie Algood took the helm. The orchestra has a long tradition of excellence including numerous UIL Sweepstakes Awards and recognition of excellence in multiple festivals across the nation. Through orchestra, students continue to hone their skills on their chosen string instrument. The Orchestra family encompasses three orchestras – Varsity Orchestra, Non-Varsity Orchestra, and JV Orchestra. Students have the opportunity to serve as section leaders and orchestra council members in each group. Over the course of a school year students perform four (or more!) concerts, have the opportunity to participate in Solo and Ensemble, All-Region, All-State, and chamber music settings. We enjoy having socials, a banquet, and an out-of-state trip in odd numbered years.
